Patty, Absolutely. With actual canines as well as the metaphoric "sheepdogs" there are different mindsets. One chooses to fully live amongst the "sheep" but will act when called upon. Others, police officers and military for example, have chosen to set themselves apart and dedicate their lives to protecting the sheep while not necessarily enjoying the benefits of living a "sheep lifestyle". For some context, I am currently deployed in Afghanistan with a group of "sheepdogs" who traded their lives for the protection of the sheep. As I stated in the article (which is an excerpt of my book with the same title), there is absolutely nothing wrong with being a sheep, or being the person who will answer the call when needed. Without them, all the sheepdogs in the world couldn't hold back the wolf. Thanks for reading my article.

Having worked in the field of public safety for the past 32 years, in both law enforcement and the fire service, in a civilian capacity the entire time; and having had border collies and a Great Pyrenees to guard our goats when I was a kid, I can totally relate to this article. Well written. The "pack mentality" can be a dangerous thing sometimes.

I think that people should be giving a chance in life, and not be so cruel about it . Even police officers fall into that categoric and thats why the officers can't perform duties right. The officers are under paid for thing and not paid enough. patty kitchens
